International Year One - Engineering & Computing

This course is an opportunity for you to start your engineering or computing degree with access to all of DMU’s cutting-edge facilities. On successful completion you will continue on to the second year of your undergraduate degree course with DMU’s Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media.

Course overview

DMUIC’s Engineering and Computing IY1 gives you the perfect opportunity to start your engineering or computing degree with access to all of DMU’s cutting-edge facilities.

Spend your first year gaining a broad understanding of all the key principles of engineering and computing as well as learning the study skills needed to make a smooth transition into your second year.

Study the way in which electronics and computing are used to control the behaviour of real world systems such as cars, buildings and aeroplanes and use your creativity and problem-solving skills to solve challenges set by tutors.

Discover how design plays a crucial role in successful engineering projects and how to use Computer-Aided Design programs.

On successful completion of the Engineering or Computing First Year, students can then continue onto the second year of one of the DMU undergraduate courses listed below, according to the route they have chosen.

Subject-specific modules

Engineering Mathematics

This module provides the students with sound knowledge and command in mathematics with an emphasis on engineering applications. This module contains the well-recognised elements of classical engineering mathematics which universally underpin the formation of the professional engineer. The principal aim of this module is to bring students up to a common standard in engineering mathematics. Therefore, the module concentrates on: a) understanding mathematical concepts associated with engineering applications, and b) applying the mathematical skills and techniques to solve engineering problems.

Principles of Engineering Design & Manufacture Utilising CAE

This module teaches the key elements of the design process, introduces the general principles of Computer Aided Engineering (CAD) and demonstrates that, with the usage of suitable industry standard software (such as CAD, CREO 3), design is an integral subject that encompasses all disciplines of engineering. Students will experience collaborative and individual design from problem formulation through to manufacture of a product. This module will show how any modern engineer has to tackle a range of issues and produce cost-effective solutions while monitoring product life-cycle with a view to maintaining sustainability and avoiding irreversible environmental damage.

Electrical and Electronic Principles

This double module consolidates fundamental principles in electrical and electronics science together with a basic knowledge and understanding of common analogue and digital electronic devices.

Mechanical Principles

The aim of this double module is to provide you with a clear understanding of the key concepts of mechanical engineering. Learn to take accurate measurements, analyse and critically appraise experimental data and present the results of your experiments with a critical analysis in a written format as a short scientific report.

Database Management and Reporting

The module provides the student with a thorough understanding of how data is modelled in a relational database management system (RDBMS). Students will also be exposed to database design principles possibly using a suitable tool for the generation of entity relationship diagrams. The module develops skills in defining and manipulating data using SQL. The language will be used to insert, delete, update and select data. The skills in data retrieval will range from single table selection to multiple table joins and grouping of records. Students will also learn how to test these SQL statements.

Information Systems Development

This module gives an insight into the many tasks that must be carried out during a project. It provides a practical introduction to some of the techniques used at different stages of a product. It also illustrates how these tasks fit together within the overall project framework, and how they can be managed to ensure that the aims of the project are met. The intention of this module is to provide the students with a practical, integrated overview of the Information Systems (IS) development process, from project selection and inception, through the capture and analysis of user requirements, to the design and production of a simple prototype system that satisfies those requirements. A constrained case study is used to take the students through a complete structured development cycle.

Visual Web Development

This module introduces the fundamentals of programming. No previous knowledge or experience is assumed. The aim is to provide students with a sufficiently detailed, generally applicable background in programming. This way, they can either develop their programming skills further in subsequent modules, or if they choose to move away from programming, still have a working knowledge of software development to implement small appplications and maybe more importantly, be appreciative of programming in general during their computing-related careers.
