This module enables students to enhance their basic IT skills in terms of use of preparation and use of documents and spreadsheets using Microsoft Office, and presentation skills using Powerpoint. It further helps them both to develop the research skills through appropriate use of the Internet and to show them how using the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and social media can enable them to communicate effectively with their tutors and fellow students during their studies.

This module is the first of two that aims to ensure that students have the mathematical skills and knowledge to cope with the mathematical content of their degree course.

In this first module, students will be able to check that they can remember the maths that they did at school and ensure that they can identify the terminology in English for the different types of calculations in mathematics. This will help students to prepare for the module in term two in which they will need to apply their knowledge and skills to more complex problems they will encounter in their specialist subject area, whether that is business, computing, science or engineering.

This module will familiarise students with the generic English language skills and conventions sufficient to cope with independent study at undergraduate level, i.e. equivalent to minimum B2 (CEFR) level. Students will be able to speak individually and interact with others on familiar academic topics, conveying the general message in most contexts, follow the argument of lectures and other longer stretches of speech on familiar academic topics, understand a range of academic texts and complete a variety of tasks based on them, and cope with written assignments at the undergraduate level.

This module is designed to help students develop the academic study and personal skills needed to be successful in their studies. Students will also consider and develop the core competencies that they will need for employment, and to do so in ways which incorporates professionalism and ethical practice.

This module will familiarise students with the English language skills, vocabulary and conventions specific to their preferred pathway and future academic aspirations, and sufficient to cope with independent study at the undergraduate level, i.e. equivalent to B2 (CEFR) level. Students will be grouped in small class sizes with a focus on their chosen future degree pathway. The students will be able to speak individually and interact with others on pathway-related academic topics, conveying the general message in most contexts; follow the argument of lectures and other long stretches of speech on pathway-related academic topics; understand a range of academic texts and complete a variety of tasks based on them, and cope with written assignments specific to their pathway at undergraduate level.

This module will develop your reading, writing and oral communication skills to the required standard to enable you to cope more confidently with university study. It will provide you with the reading skills to understand a variety of academic and other texts, and to deal with a multiplicity of tasks from multiple-choice to comprehension of charts. It will also provide you with relevant writing skills, such as essay-writing and report writing. The module also considers academic discourse and the importance of team working.

The module introduces students to research methods related to research within their subject area. The students will consider how to select a research topic, decide on an appropriate methodology, plan the steps required to research the chosen topic and present findings effectively. Students are also introduced to the ethical questions which need to be taken into consideration by researchers.
