International Year Zero - Science

This course aims to prepare you with a foundation of scientific knowledge and develop practical abilities such as core technical and research skills.

Our science pathway course has been designed to prepare you with core scientific knowledge and skills.

During this course, you will explore a range of subject matter from biology and chemistry to pharmaceutical sciences and forensic science.

Students who study science at the University of Greenwich benefit from the university’s outstanding teaching, innovative research and links with industry. For example, Forensic Science at the university is rated number one for student satisfaction in London.

To join this course you will need to have successfully completed high school (5 GCSE Grades A – D) or equivalent and meet the English language requirements. We offer Pre-sessional English which is a 6 or 12-week extension course for those who may not yet meet the required English language standards for direct entry to our pathways.

Direct Entry – IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5)
Pre-sessional English 6-weeks – IELTS 5.0 (with no skill below 4.5)
Pre-sessional English 12-weeks – IELTS 4.5 (with no skill below 4.0)

Subject-specific modules

Pure Mathematics

The Pure Mathematics module will help develop your mathematical understanding as well as your familiarity and fluency with mathematical notation. It will prepare you to use mathematical applications for problem-solving in the sciences, engineering and computer science.

Mechanics

Mechanics aims to develop the knowledge and skills that you will be expected to demonstrate in your continuing studies at first-degree level. It ensures that you can use appropriate mathematical language and understand mathematical notation, conventions and units. The module also introduces the relationships between forces, linear motion and energy, and the conditions for the static equilibrium of a body.

Further Mathematics

Further Mathematics aims to build on the basic knowledge and techniques acquired during your prior study of mathematics, and further your understanding of the ways in which more advanced mathematical techniques aid problem-solving and scenario modelling.

Properties of Matter & Waves

This module aims to provide you with a basic post-high-school knowledge of atomic physics, materials, heat and gases, and oscillations and waves. It further introduces you to laboratory practice and procedures, with an emphasis on the need to work with regard to the safety of yourself and others.

Electricity, Electronics and Fields

This module aims to develop your understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as fields and their effects. This will enable you to apply your understanding of these topics to real situations in engineering and computer science. The module further introduces you to laboratory practice with an emphasis on the need to work with regard to the safety of yourself and others.

Optional module A (Choose A or B): Chemistry 1

The aim of this module is to provide you with an introduction to post-high-school chemistry while giving you a stimulating grounding in the basic theoretical principles of the subject. The module also aims to introduce you to laboratory practice with an emphasis on the need to work with regard to safety.

Optional module B (Choose A or B): Data Analysis

Data Analysis enables you to work with data for the purpose of solving real-life problems in the context of your chosen field of study. You will be introduced to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods, as well as statistical packages to help you collate and present data in forms that aid effective analysis and interpretation.
